Whiting Parents As Teachers Program

BACKGROUND:

Parents as Teachers (PAT) of Lake County, Inc. was originally founded through a partnership with the City of Hammond, Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers (SMMHC), and the School City of Hammond. Since its inception, the PAT program has grown quickly throughout Lake County.

In January of 2006, with the support of the Whiting schools and the B.P. Foundation, a Bi-lingual Parent Educator (PE) was hired and began serving families in the Whiting community.  Now, three years later, the Whiting program has grown to reach its full capacity and sustains a small waiting list of families eager to join the program.

Utilizing the award winning Parents as Teachers Born to Learn curriculum, the program is free to all Whiting residents with children prenatal to kindergarten entry and is available in English or Spanish.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

The Whiting program is based out of Nathan Hale Elementary School, 1851 Oliver Street.  The school generously donates classroom #101 for Parents as Teachers services.

Services provided by Whiting PAT includes:

  • Monthly Personal Home Visits
  • Monthly Playgroups
  • Developmental Screenings
  • Resource Networking

If you are a resident of the Whiting community and wish to enroll in Parents as Teachers, please contact our office at 219.554.1710.
