Lake Station Parents As Teachers Program

BACKGROUND:
The Lake Station Schools Parents As Teachers program began in February 2002 as a replication model of the very successful program from St. Louis, Missouri.  We are located in Virgil I. Bailey Elementary School in Lake Station.

The program began with one full time Parent Educator serving families with children from birth to three years of age, including prenatal moms.  In March 2003 the Parent Educator was certified to serve families with children from birth through kindergarten entry, prenatal moms included.

In January 2005 a bilingual parent educator was hired to serve our Spanish families.  She was certified in January for birth to three years, prenatal moms included.  In June 2005 she was certified to serve children three years to kindergarten entry.

In January 2007 a third full time parent educator was certified to deliver the prenatal-to-3-years-old curriculum.  In February 2008 she will be trained in three years to kindergarten entry.

The Lake Station Schools Parents As Teachers program now serves about 80 families with children prenatal through kindergarten entry, including Spanish-speaking families.
