Mental Health America of Lake County
Parents As Teachers Program
BACKGROUND:
Mental Health America of Lake County (MHA), formerly Mental Health Association of Lake County, was founded in 1957. Currently, MHA offers the following programs throughout the county: Girls Inc., Healthy Families of Lake County, I’m Thumbody Special, Parents as Teachers, Cribs for Kids, and Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP). More information on these programs can be found at our website: www.mhalakecounty.org.
The Parents as Teachers program at Mental Health America of Lake County enrolled its first family in 2003. At the time, the part-time parent educator saw 5 community families. When a continued need and interest in the program was found throughout the county, a full-time parent educator was hired in 2004 and began seeing an additional 25 families.
In May 2005, a new parent educator was certified and hired and 40 families were enrolled in Parents as Teachers.
In May 2008, a second full-time parent educator was certified and hired and now 71 families are being seen through Parents as Teachers at Mental Health America of Lake County.
