Crown Point Parents As Teachers Program
BACKGROUND:
Parents as Teachers (PAT) of Lake County, Inc. was originally founded through a partnership with the City of Hammond, Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers (SMMHC), and the School City of Hammond. Since its inception, the PAT program has grown quickly throughout Lake County
In 2003 an Advisory Committee began meeting to discuss bringing the Parents as Teachers program to Crown Point. In 2007, Parents as Teachers of Lake County, Inc (then Parents as Teachers of Hammond/Lake County, Inc.) with support from Saint Anthony’s Hospital, hired the first Parent Educator to serve families in Crown Point. At the same time, the Crown Point School Corporation decided to offer PAT to families in their Title I school, Timothy Ball Elementary School, and hired a Parent Educator to work with families at Timothy Ball.
Currently, the Crown Point program is based out of the Centier bank building in downtown Crown Point. The bank generously donates office space and furniture for Crown Point PAT staff. The Centier office space hosts the Site Coordinator for the South County Programs, which includes Timothy Ball PAT and Lowell PAT. The office space is utilized for South County staff meetings and trainings. As the Crown Point program grows, we continue to collaborate with Timothy Ball Elementary School, to provide services to all residents of Crown Point, within the Crown Point School system boundaries.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
In addition to monthly home visits, we offer several FREE group meetings each month:
- Birth to 3 year old playgroup at one of the elementary schools (held the 3rd Thursday of the month at 9:30 am)
- Birth to 3 year old playgroup at Timothy Ball elementary school (held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 9:30 am)
- 3 year old to Kindergarten playgroup held at Timothy Ball elementary school (held the last Tuesday of the month at 2:30 pm)
